Our headquarters are in Bilbao, at Hulu Ocio Aventura y Naturaleza, and we also have a Centre of Adventure Sports in Frías (smallest medieval city in Europe), in the Montes Obarenes Natural Park (Merindades, North of Burgos) and 8km from the Valderejo Natural Park (Alava). At the centre for Adventure Sports, we offer activities in a natural environment including: white water kayaking, rafting, calm water kayak excursions, canyoning, caving, trekking, hiking, orienteering, mountain biking, paitball, hot air ballon flights, introduction to kayaking courses or rent your own kayak.
We develop programmes and activities in spectacular settings including: La Arboleda (Vizcaya), Valderejo Natural Park (Alava), Montes Obarenes Natural Park (North Burgos) and in Las Merindades (North Burgos). In addition, some of the activities and programmes are designed to be carried out anywhere thet meets the conditions required for the activity or programme.
We offer a selection of highly attractive programmes, aimed at meeting the needs of different customer profiles. In addition, we offer personalised advice, with solutions designed to meet your needs, and we provide tailor-made programmes or events.

Adventure-seeking ADN

There is some data in the human being from which it is not possible to escape. The ADN segments determining the basic information of each individual are a clear example of this. In the case of Karlos Vinuesa, manager of Hulu Aventura, the genes making up his helicoidal chain are clearly “adventure-seekiing”.

Prime evidence of this is the establishment of the company. After studying International Business and working for several years as the Head of Commercial Teams in Insurance, Karlos decided to listen to his entrepreneurial spirit and set up Hulu. “I have always found it difficult to work in hierarchical environments where my decision-making capacities are limited”. This, combined with his love of sport and an adventurous spirit, led to the creation of a company specialising in active tourism. “The objective was to create my own job for the future based on an activity which I love”, explains the 39-year old from Bilbao.
His sporting career is closely linked to football, which he played until he was 27. While, he insists that he will be a footballer for the rest of his life, kayaking trekking have gradually earned a place among his pastimes. In fact, he goes trekking every year, his destinations including South Africa, Nepal or the Trans-Pyrenees. Although he was unable to take up adventure sports on a regular basis until he gave up football, he is convinced that the “spirit of adventure” has always been incrusted in his genes. “I think it's almost impossible for someone who doesn't like sport or backpacking, or who hasn't lived in a natural environment and who doesn’t have a naturalist spirit to become an adventurer”, he says.
Setting up Hulu was i itself an adventure. As with all beginnings, the start was “difficult, but not exceptionally hard. We worked for nothing, we weren't sure about the feasibility of the project and we had to change several of our initial proposals…”. However, having got over the initial hurdles, Karlos now values “the independence it offers” and enjoys his work, “especially when on a Kayak trip while other people are putting up with bosses, traffic jams, etc.…”, he adds with satisfaction.

After eight years, Hulu, which is the name of an Eskimo knife, has found its niche in the market and has grown, diversifying its customer profile. “We aim at institutions, schools, groups and companies”, and hope to continue growing. In the near future, we hope to be able to build and market an ice climbing wall. In the longer term, our goal is to offer accommodation and catering, “in order to diversify our income and improve the seasonal nature of the business”.
At the moment they continue in the Burgos town of Frías, where they have managed to exploit the natural opportunities offered by the environment for adventure sports. “In addition we possess excellent local knowledge, which is also an advantage.
